enke was founded in 2009 by three young social entrepreneurs: Kathryn Maunders, Tom Walsh and Philippa Wheaton. Working together to deliver the first enke Program, the team united around a core vision of empowering the next generation of regional leadership. Firm believers that the best investments take time, they believe our future will be determined by the investment we place in our youth today.
Philippa Wheaton – Executive Director
Pip has had an unconventional path into the development sector. While she started her career working in event management in Sydney’s music industry, a passion for youth development and advocacy developed through her volunteer roles with Sudanese refugees and Greenpeace Australia Pacific. When she moved to South Africa it was to work in some of the most under-resourced schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal with GOLD Peer Education. However, during this time, she began to develop the concept for enke: Make Your Mark. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Thomas Walsh – Advisor
Tom has a long history of working in leadership development programs with Australian youth. When he found himself working with disadvantaged youth in KwaZulu-Natal it was a logical progression to apply his knowledge and experience to the South African context. In the wake of the first enke: Forum, Tom was the first to realise that the fledgling program had the potential to be much, much more. Tom is currently working with McKinsey and Company, Melbourne, where he has been since 2010.
Kathryn Maunders – Advisor
Whilst studying Economics and Management at Oxford University, Kathryn came across the concept of Social Entrepreneurship – creating systemic change through sustainable and scalable initiatives. Through volunteer experiences in Nepal, and setting up her first social mission organisation at the age of 19, Kathryn has firmly rooted in her a belief in the power of young people as the innovative change makers of today and tomorrow. In 2009, she moved to South Africa to build enke: Make Your Mark. Kathryn has been a consultant with McKinsey and Company in Johannesburg since the start of 2011.
